Chrysalis

Named for the protective cocoon that covers a caterpillar during its transformation to a butterfly, Chrysalis encompasses Mssng Lnks fundamental mission to provide minority and inner-city junior high and high school students with the vocal training, tools and support network they need should they decide to pursue a career in classical vocal performance or musical theatre. Like the pupa that goes through physical changes as it matures from larva to adult, individuals go through their own stages of development in their quest to becoming a professional singer — and support is vital to their ability to thrive and ultimately succeed.

Pursuing a career in voice, like any educational pursuit, can be negatively impacted by a variety of external stresses, including financial worries, pressures from friends and family, time constraints and logistical challenges. If students lack direct access to advisors who can offer guidance, answer questions and help manage seemingly insurmountable obstacles, they will likely become frustrated, discouraged and even consider changing career paths. By providing a collaborative web of support, safety and stability, Chrysalis gives individual vocalists the training, encouragement and inspiration they need to face these challenges head on.

An important element of Chrysalis is our vocal ensemble. Participation in the ensemble provides members invaluable experience singing as part of a group that performs on a local, national and even international level. In addition, members have a unique opportunity to collaborate and interact with regional arts and music organizations, area churches and community choruses. Because members are exposed to a broad range of musical styles and genres, they become empowered to explore the world through their music.

By joining Chrysalis, students will:

  • Participate in a comprehensive curriculum including music theory, reading and writing
  • Study with a private voice teacher
  • Attend professional productions, masterclasses and live performances
  • Learn a combination of standard choral and solo repertoire
  • Participate in a variety of performance opportunities, including choral concerts and solo recitals
  • Perform works written by composers from around the world – broadening their exposure to different cultures and societies
  • Visit college music departments

Chrysalis membership is BY AUDITION ONLY. Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester. All interested students are encouraged to apply for an audition.
